Monselice_Italy_The Church of St George

This is the last of the seven churches of Monselice. In the next post, i will accompany you in other places full of history of this medieval town.

The Church of St George, said of the "Saints", is the highest point of arrival of the sacred way, and point of convergence of popular devotion. Alvise Duodo, grandson of Peter, Pope Innocent X obtained from the translation of the bodies of three saints, martyrs and numerous relics from the church of Rome Tor de'Specchi in the church of San Giorgio in Monselice.

The event was solemnly celebrated June 24, 1651. It was also the occasion to renew the floor of the church and give it a new altar. The beautiful altar frontal, which is still admired today, probably from the workshop of Corberelli is made of polychrome marble inlay, mother of pearl and precious stones.

To celebrate the solemn transfer was erected the "Porta Romana" and was prepared the "memorial" with the busts of Francis, Dominic and Peter Duodo (completed around 1670), was added to the fountain, and the church of San Giorgio was enriched with a bell and a clock.

Half of 1600 are the paintings of the lunettes and spandrels around the central hall depicting the Holy Family, the Annunciation, two Evangelists, St. Roch, St. Charles Borromeo, St. Lorenzo Giustiniani.

The dome is open to the sky, is decorated with illusionistic painting that simulates a coffered ceiling, closer to the decorations of Brescia Thomas Sandrini, you can see two balconies with figures and putti musicians.
