Vernazza_Liguria_Italy

Vernazza (Vernassa in Liguria, in the local variant Vernas)is an Italian town of 975 inhabitants in the province of La Spezia in Liguria. It is one of the Cinque Terre. The town has been reviewed as one of the most beautiful towns in Italy.

Starting from the west is the second of the countries that make up the Cinque Terre, nestled in a bay between the towns of Riomaggiore and Monterosso al Mare, and also includes the next village of Corniglia, a fraction thereof. The territory is also characterized by the typical terraced for the cultivation of the vine, a style created through the centuries by man and morphology that, according to one estimate, seems to have developed more than 7000 km of dry stone walls.

The country would have the same name then the Vernaccia wine produced there and that it was known as wine "local" or "nostrale") is documented for the first time in an act of 1080 as a fortified town (castrum governmental organizations) based maritime the Marquis Obertenghi, likely starting point of the naval forces used for defense against Saracens.

In the middle of the twelfth century Vernazza was a landing from Genoa used as a basis for the conquest of the eastern Liguria, there are many reminders of the sea which, during the Middle Ages, have the inhabitants of Vernazza, diligent in warfare on behalf of Genoa and its advantage.
In 1209 William son of Ponza Enrichino delivered their part of the castle of Vernazza in Genoa, and the same day the men of the village, named individually swore allegiance to the republic: it was 88 heads of families (for a population estimated around 350 - 400 units), which pledged to obey Genoa. During the '400 Vernazza has a very effective system of fortifications used to defend against pirate raids feared that rage even in the next century.
