Certosa of Ferrara _Italy_Part 1

One of the main historical and artistic monuments of the Italian Renaissance is the Certosa of Ferrara, one of the largest architectural complex in this city.

This beautiful monumental cemetery began as a monastery for the Order of the Carthusians in 1461 until the end of 1700, when the work of Napoleon, the suppression of religious orders and the confiscation of church property away from the city permanently Carthusians. Since then, the monastery was incorporated into the Herculean Addition, which included a major expansion of the city and it doubles the size, making it monumentale.


The cemetery project was entrusted to the Journal of the Este court Biagio Rossetti by Duke Ercole I d'Este in 1498 and begin Work on the construction of the new church, the Basilica of St. Christopher, a temple surrounded by the immense square.
